Just do YOUR thing!!

Adopt Time Management practices that align with YOUR style!!

I recently saw an article about time management (it's so amazing, go read it!! You're welcome!!), and it was super inspiring for me. My favorite quote was this:

"It works for me, and that’s the most important thing, because if it doesn’t, then you simply won’t use it." - Lucy O'Connor"

That being said, I've always been a paper planner type of person. Electronic planners are awesome for scheduling with clients, coordinating with teams, and setting up some personal reminders, but if my day isn't planned out on PAPER and in FRONT of me every morning when I walk into the kitchen, I'm a lot more likely to get distracted, then side-tracked, then, well... LOST.  #squirrel

One of my caring, concerned, and well-intentioned mentors insisted that I NEEDED to go entirely digital, because it would make my life SO much easier!!! It would reduce the "stuff" in my physical space, I could access my calendar at ALL times via my phone, and it would just be SO brilliant and perfect for me!! :D

Um, that sounds Awesome!!!!!

Well, I like to consider myself as being "coachable" and willing to respond to suggestions and guidance when given from a credible source such as my super-qualified mentor (she's seriously awesome!!), so I tried it for a couple weeks.

Omigoodness...

Confession: I lost track of everything!!!

AutoINcorrect had me pulling my hair out every time I tried to add another event or task to my schedule. There was also some lag on my devices, which meant it sometimes took me 5 minutes just to add one item to my calendar, and I would sometimes even forget what I was adding by the time everything loaded up properly. #MomBrain

I was feeling frustrated about having to open the app on my phone every time I had forgotten what I needed to be doing at that point (which was often, I'll be honest... I'm telling you, Mom Brain is a REAL thing!!), and half the time, I would get distracted by my notifications and get caught up in texts, emails, or (dun-dun-dun!!!) Facebook(Just me?... No?... Thank goodness!!)

Not to mention all the times I accidentally dismissed the friggin' notifications! Because then I got distracted AGAIN as I would go back into the app to figure out WHAT the notification even SAID before I impulsively swiped it away into oblivion..... And the most frequently lost items were lost as my kids dismissed the notification because they wanted to "help Mommy" by tapping the screen... (Thanks, but no thanks, guys!!)

It was driving me NUTS.

(Hehehe!! Okay, but seriously...)

Finally, I said "SCREW IT!!" (Literally, I said it OUT LOUD one day), and just pulled out my paper planner again. Aaaaand there was much rejoicing!! *crowd cheering*

I could plan my day without my phone in my face. And every time I walked by my planner (multiple times per day; it's in the kitchen. Like #BAM), I was reminded of what I needed to be focusing on next. I could use my simple highlighters or different colored pens instead of trying to sift through the different colors for tasks and events on my phone (which green was it that I was using for client work again?? I'm OCD, I want them to match, and I kept choosing the WRONG one. The struggle is REAL).

No more AutoINcorrect. No more waiting for apps to load or missing notifications. No more worrying about missing things if my phone went dead or missing. Nothing could get accidentally deleted by a toddler on a tapping rampage. (Party on, Garth!!)

It was liberating!!

Literally, I'm pretty sure angels were singing. And I'm not gonna lie, the Hallelujah Chorus was my frequent song of choice when it came to "singing the random tune that comes into your head" sessions as I was able to get back on my Bandwagon and start rockin' and rollin' again. (Insert "flex" emoji here!!)

Now, let me be clear about something; I don't HATE my electronic calendar. It's very useful, and I use it as an occasional reference, especially in working with scheduling my clients & coordinating with other people. But it is NOT the star of my show

I'm SO, SOOOO grateful I decided to stick with my own intuition on this and do my OWN thing!! I tried another method, it didn't work, so I simply went back to what WAS working for me, and I haven't looked back or regretted my decision since. <3

I just want to reassure you that trying new things will ALWAYS teach you something new about yourself; either you will figure out something that works BETTER, or you'll find out what doesn't work AT ALL for your style. Either way, you're growing, learning, and progressing, so don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone!! And if you're feeling confused or overwhelmed in the midst of trying to figure things out, it's time to get quiet and listen to your heart, your soul, your instincts. You truly do know what's best. ;) A good friend of mine gave this advice:

"If you want to find your path in life, get quiet and listen to what your heart is whispering to you." —Erin Taylor of Building Connected Communities

What's most important is that what you're doing is WORKING for YOU.

If it's motivating you to take action toward your goals, keep doing it!! If it's inspiring you and energizing you, GO for it!! Always consider suggestions to a reasonable extent, and be willing to try new things, but if it ain't broke, and you KNOW it works for you, stop trying to FIX it!! ;)

Please note: This is not permission to just stagnate where you ARE and claim that you're "trying" if you're really just hiding away & giving in to your fears!!! (Yep, I see you.) I'm talking about doing the stuff that's GETTING you somewhere. Taking ACTION and feeling a sense of peace, KNOWING that there is an effective, productive, and supportive process in place to help you move forward in your business & your life. If you're struggling to find something which works for you, CLICK HERE to apply for a Clarity Call: together, we can assess where you are, what's not working, and how I can be of service to you. :)

Just make sure you adopt the Time Management practices that align with YOUR style, purpose, and goals. You have so many options for proven, effective methods!! Just because ONE doesn't work for you doesn't mean that NONE will; keep trying, and you will be blessed for your efforts. So whether you're a Digital Diva rocking the apps and notes with grace and ease, or if you prefer to stick with the old-school paper....

Just make sure you're in alignment with YOUR soul, YOUR purpose, YOUR desires...

And YOUR planning style. ;)
